This past week in ISM I began to start the research process from my original work. I analyzed 2 different articles discussing the challenges and concerns kid's face when facing a diagnosis or cancer. After analyzing both the articles I have come to the conclusion that knowledge of the child's diagnosis is crucial for any age group. An understanding of what cancer is and how it will affect the child helps the child to be less confused and decreases their stress and anxiety levels. In addition I learned that it is better to give children information in small amounts opposed to all at once as it can be overwhelming and scary. I understand the importance of the the information coming directly from parents, as it is common for kids to hear things about cancer from other sources. Holding information back from the kids runs the risk of them gaining false information and jumping to the worst conclusions. The articles will be extremely useful in the development of my original work. I will use this information to provide resources for emotional support and and basic information that will benefit children of all ages. This upcoming week I am excited to continue reaching out to more doctors in the DFW area that can hopefully guide me as I begin working on my original work.
